Geography

 

Sullivan County has a total land area of 1011 square miles, which includes large tracts of forest and farmland and 27 square miles of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Sullivan County is located in southern New York State, framed by the Catskill Mountains and the Upper Delaware River. The County Seat, Monticello, lies 90 miles northwest of New York City on NYS Route 17 (Future I-86). Northern Sullivan County rests within the 106 year-old, 286,000-acre Catskill Park. The 70-mile, Upper Delaware National Scenic and Recreational River lines the county’s western border with Pennsylvania.

 

Demographics

 

According to the US Census, Sullivan County’s estimated 2010 full-time population is 76,363 residents—up from 73,966 in 2000—within 29,509 households. The population reaches an estimated 150,000 residents if second home-owners are included. In summer, when other temporary residents and visitors are counted, the population can reach 300,000 at its peak.
